Mapleton Tornado, (AP) MAPLETON, Iowa (AP) - The small western Iowa town of Mapleton is reopened after a tornado damaged the mayor estimated 60 percent of the city. Mayor Fred Standa says officials began allowing people back in around 10:30 am Sunday. They had barricades in the city due to security concerns about gas leaks and other damage. The tornado struck the town of about 1,200 on Saturday night. It uprooted trees, blew the roof of a school and downed power lines. Standa estimated that about percent is "almost flat." Gov. Terry Branstad will tour the damage today, and the National Weather Service has sent a team to make an assessment. Mapleton Tornado
