Supermarket Meat You Should Never Buy

Supermarket Meat You Should Never Buy, One big clue lets you know if packaged pork, chicken, and beef have been sitting around awhile. Smart Shopping: A Surprising Way to Tell If Meat is Really Fresh, Americans waste more than $2,000 a year by throwing away unused groceries. Are shoppers being duped into buying what they don't need by sneaky tactics employed by supermarkets? On Easy Does It with Ereka Vetrini, consumer spending guru Phil Lempert shares his strategy for smart shopping, including when -- and why -- you should avoid meat markdowns.

First, shop on Wednesdays as this is the typical day that grocery stores host their sales. When you arrive at the store, Lempert recommends that shoppers avoid the path that supermarkets have set out. Stay clear of the produce department until the end of your trip. "It's full of aromas and colors and it puts us in a great mood, and we're gonna spend more time in the store," says Lempert. "I want you to head to the center of the store where it's got unemotional boxes and jars and cans and so on. And frankly, from a food safety standpoint, that's what you want to put in your cart first anyway.

Then you can go to the produce because by now you're desensitized. Then you go to the dairy department, then you'll go to the frozen foods department." And those food markdowns that look like deals of the century? If the purchase date is too close to the expiration date, walk on by -- especially when it comes to packaged meat. Lempert points out that pork, chicken, beef and some seafood is often packaged in Styrofoam containers. Underneath the meat is something called a "bladder" and it's used to absorb the moisture from the meat or seafood.

Kristen Stewart Cuts Interview Short

Kristen Stewart Cuts Interview Short, The star's first chat with fans since her cheating scandal doesn't go so smooth. Kristen Stewart's 30-minute webcast lasts half that long, no mention of RPattz, Kristen Stewart's first live interview since she cheated on longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson in July was awkward to say the least, and it only lasted about half as long as it was supposed to! The live webcast was advertised as a 30-minute event to promote Balenciaga's new Florabotanica perfume, but the chat was over after about 16 minutes.

Fans submitted more than 5,000 questions for the 22-year-old "Twilight" star about subjects as varied as Pattinson, her favorite music, and her decision to do her first endorsement deal with the high-fashion brand. However, the interviewer stuck to a dozen or so questions that were strictly focused on the fragrance. Sorry, RPattz fans!

But even talking about perfume proved to be difficult for Stewart, who often stammered and appeared to be at a loss for words during the chat. "Luckily, I like the smell of the fragrance, so I don't have to lie about that, and that's great!" she said at one point. She also described the type of person who usually likes the Balenciaga label. "I feel like it does draw sort of fearless people," she noted. "I just find that those are the kind of people who are attracted to Balenciaga. Even in this [fragrance], there's a fearlessness to it ... it's definitely not to be denied." When the friendly interviewer asked if Stewart included herself in this group, she was quick to answer. "Damn right," the starlet said with a laugh. "Yeah, I hope so. I mean, God, I try to do that every day."

Co-Stars That 'Full House' Star Doesn't Talk To

Co-Stars That 'Full House' Star Doesn't Talk To, Candace Cameron opens up about her sitcom past, her brother's controversial remarks, and her new movie. Candace Cameron talks holiday movie, Olsen twins, brother Kirk and motherhood, For those of you who caught the recent "Full House" reunion, you know that the show's former star, who played D.J. Tanner, has indeed grown into a gorgeous woman. But you may be surprised the extent to which Candace Cameron Bure (yes, she has tacked on her married name) has truly become an adult.

Now 36 years old and the mother of three, her oldest, daughter Natasha, is three years older than Candace was when she first appeared on the popular family sitcom 25 years ago. Natasha is now also taller than her famous mom.

I caught up with Candace recently as she was promoting the drama "The Heart of Christmas," available now on DVD. The film is both heart wrenching and uplifting, based on the true story of a community that rallies around a young boy who is diagnosed with cancer. Candace spoke with me about how she prepares for emotional scenes. She also opened up about her brother Kirk Cameron (of former "Growing Pains" fame), her thoughts on why the Olsen twins didn't make it to the "Full House" reunion, and why she has turned down roles on successful sitcoms that are on the air today.

Presidential Candidates' Celeb Donors

Presidential Candidates' Celeb Donors, Obama has received financial support from some big names in Hollywood. Top VIP donors for Obama and Romney, Money plays a big role in the elections. Each month, political pundits track fundraising and spending by the political parties, the campaigns and the political action committees, or PACs.

A lot of those dollars are coming from some big-money names. But who are they? So far, one of the pro-Mitt Romney PACs, Restore Our Future, has made inroads with many of the nation's billionaires, while one of the pro-President Barack Obama PACs, Priorities USA Action, has enjoyed a lot of support from Hollywood celebrities.

With the election in November, here's a look at some of the biggest donors so far.

High-Tech Costume Puts A Hole In Your Chest

High-Tech Costume Puts A Hole In Your Chest, Thanks to a NASA rocket scientist, this Halloween's creepiest outfit may be the coolest. It Took a Rocket Scientist to Create This Costume, When NASA engineer Mark Rober posted a Halloween costume on YouTube last year using two iPads to create the effect of a hole through his stomach, more than 3 million people checked it out.

The idea, like the effect in Rober's stomach, blew up. But viewers complained they didn't have an extra thousand dollars lying around to outfit their own Halloween costumes in a similar way.

Rober took the complaints to heart. So when he wasn't busy designing components for the Curiosity Rover that landed on Mars a couple of months ago, he devoted evenings and weekends to developing a similar but affordable costume called Digital Dudz.

Actor's Impolite Remark To Hollywood

Actor's Impolite Remark To Hollywood, Joaquin Phoenix just may have cost himself an Oscar nomination thanks to a recent interview. Joaquin Phoenix says Oscar race is 'bull****', If you've been following Joaquin Phoenix closely the past few years, you may have seen this coming.

The 37-year-old actor is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for his performance as a paint thinner-swilling WWII vet who takes up with the founder of a controversial new religion in "The Master." But Phoenix could care less about lobbying for a golden statuette.

"I think it's bull****," he said recently in Interview Magazine when asked what he's going to do when he's put on the awards circuit for "The Master." "I don't want to be a part of it," Phoenix went on to say, adding, "I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other . . . It's the stupidest thing in the whole world."

Marlin Goes Berserk, Attacks Fishermen

Marlin Goes Berserk, Attacks Fishermen, A crew's attempt to reel in a 600-pound beauty off Australia nearly turns into a disaster. Landing a large marlin can be an exciting chore, but it can also be dangerous, as the crew aboard the Little Audrey discovered recently while fighting a 600-pound black marlin off Cairns, Australia. The accompanying footage--shown from several camera angles--shows a frenetic scene in which the powerful marlin leaps briefly onto the cruiser as it's being reeled in by a fisherman in a fighting chair.

The man with what looks like a camera pole narrowly avoids being skewered, while a crewman is struck in the head by a hunk of stairwell torn loose by the billfish. This occurred as the captain was backing up, trying to assist the angler, leaving the deck awash. Fortunately, the marlin's time on the deck was brief, as it quickly flopped back into the water. According to a description by the YouTube user, Offshoreterror: "The crew was lucky to escape with only minor injuries."

Don't Want To Go Apple? Get These Instead

Don't Want To Go Apple? Get These Instead, The iPhone, iPad, and MacBook have legions of fans, but they're not for everyone. 6 alternatives to Apple's tech toys, Apple has spent more than a decade leaching its hip little tech toys into American homes and pop culture with very little pushback from the stodgy tech sector. Time's up.

A month after releasing its iPhone 5 and about a week away from debuting its iPad Mini and newest 13-inch MacBook Pro, Apple finds itself in a peculiar position. Revenue jumped 23% last quarter from the same period a year ago and the company's next year-end summary follows up a 66% annual revenue spike in its 2011 report.

As ubiquitous as the company seems, though, it's still not as big a force as it could be. Its 17% market share among mobile phones in the U.S. still trails Samsung (25.7%) and LG (18.2%), according to market research firm ComScore.

Meanwhile, its iOS platform's 34.3% share of the U.S. smartphone market still trails Google Android's growing 52.6% stake.

That disparity is far more pronounced globally, where research firm Gartner says Nokia and Samsung's 41% mobile market share dwarfs Apple's 5%. Among global smartphone users, Apple fares somewhat better, with a 24% share of the market that's still been surpassed by Android's 50% dominance.

Ryan's Embarrassing Gaffe At NFL Practice

Ryan's Embarrassing Gaffe At NFL Practice, The Republican nominee for vice president talked with Browns players, but made one odd mistake. Paul Ryan visits Cleveland Browns practice but can't tell his quarterbacks apart, It's been quite a week for the Cleveland Browns franchise. New Owner Jimmy Haslam was approved at the league meetings, current team president Mike Holmgren is on his way out as a former Philadelphia Eagles executive is on his way in, and a team that's been unexciting in the extreme over the last decade (for the most part) has received an unprecedented number of news blasts as a result.

On Wednesday, the Browns got even more media attention when Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited practice as the team was preparing for its Sunday showdown against the Indianapolis Colts.

Rice, a longtime Browns fan who counts the great Jim Brown as one of her sports heroes, had no trouble identifying everybody on the field. Ryan, who's from Wisconsin, had a few issues when trying to discern the difference between quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy.

Rumors Swirl About N. Korea's First Lady

Rumors Swirl About N. Korea's First Lady, Her recent absence from the public spotlight has raised plenty of guesswork. Speculations swirl about 'missing' North Korean first lady, The lack of public appearances in more than a month by the first lady of North Korea has raised speculation about her fate.

Ri Sol Ju, a singer who married North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, customarily has been pictured with her husband during visits to military units, farms, and at official ceremonies, the Telegraph reports. But word out of South Korean media now says Ri has not been seen in public for more than 40 days.

One thought is that the young bride is pregnant and does not yet want it made public, the Daily Mail reports.

The Daily Mail notes that Ri did not join her husband during a roller coaster ride in July at the opening of the Reungra People's Resort in Pyongyang.

Actress Dresses In Trashy Ensemble

Actress Dresses In Trashy Ensemble, Brooke Shields rocks a ratty mullet and bellybutton ring while hurling insults on a sitcom. Brooke Shields gets trashy on 'The Middle' , Former fashion model Brooke Shields did some serious dressing down on ABC's "The Middle" last night.

Shields returned as the Hecks' trashy neighbor Rita on this week's episode. Sporting a ratty mullet and a belly-button ring and day-drinking a can of beer, Rita showed up on Frankie's doorstep insisting that the Hecks stole her family's garden hose. When Frankie gently suggested that one of Rita's unruly kids might have taken the hose instead, Rita threatened to "punch her boobs in." How neighborly!

This isn't Shields' first visit to "The Middle"; she first played Rita back in Season 1... and her wardrobe choices haven't improved a lot in the meantime. Her hilarious fashion make-under reminds us of a similar move by pop princess Katy Perry, who guest starred as a dowdy, hairy-lipped prison guard last season on Fox's "Raising Hope." Seems like a lot of beautiful stars are jumping at the chance to play trashy on TV these days. Too bad "My Name Is Earl" isn't on anymore, huh?

Star's Movie Role Angers His Mother

Star's Movie Role Angers His Mother, Matthew Fox's mom "couldn't stand" one aspect of his preparation for "Alex Cross." 'Alex Cross' Five Film Facts, Madea er, rather Tyler Perry eschews directing, writing, and cross-dressing to focus on acting as "Alex Cross", the super psychologist and daring detective at the heart of James Patterson's beloved series of mystery novels. Delving back to Cross's Detroit Police Department days, the story centers around a man-hunt for Picasso (Matthew Fox), a sadistic and sinewy serial killer with a penchant for abstract expressionism. We all know Alex Cross will stop at nothing to get the bad guy, but here are five facts about the film you might not know.

Obama, Romney Trade Lighthearted Jabs

Obama, Romney Trade Lighthearted Jabs, The president and his Republican rival draw plenty of laughs at a charity event in New York. Obama, Romney in (mostly) friendly duel of wits, President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney mocked themselves - and each other, and Joe Biden, and others - late Thursday during a joke-filled annual dinner that served as a truce of sorts in their hard-fought war for the White House.

Speaking first, Romney repeatedly underlined that he doesn't drink alcohol, quipping that he's usually invited to functions to be "the designated driver," and that Catholic Cardinal Dolan would signal his displeasure by turning Obama's wine into water - or the former Massachusetts governor's water into wine.

Addressing the crowd in the customary black tuxedo and white bow tie, Romney joked that "it's nice to finally relax and wear what Ann and I wear around the house."

Romney's Son: I Wanted To Hit Obama

Romney's Son: I Wanted To Hit Obama, Tagg Romney says he wanted to "take a swing" at the president during the tense debate. Tagg Romney: I Wanted to 'Take a Swing' at Obama During Debate, Tagg Romney, the eldest of Mitt Romney's five sons, said on Wednesday that he wanted to "take a swing" at President Obama during Tuesday night's debate, BuzzFeed reports.

Speaking on a local North Carolina radio station, Romney was asked about hearing "the president of the United States call your dad a liar."

"You want to rush down to the stage and take a swing at him," Tagg said jokingly, according to BuzzFeed audio. "But you know you can't do that because, well, first because there's a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that's the nature of the process."

We Dare You Not To Cry A Little

We Dare You Not To Cry A Little, The race to save this baby elephant may be the most heartwarming thing you see today. Baby elephant rescue will steal your heart, A baby stuck in a well. A frantic mother crazed with worry for her offspring. Anyone could relate, but these very human emotions came from the bond of an elephant baby and her mother. And a video capturing the rescued calf has captivated the Web.

Just your typical day in Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where a team of elephant conservationists from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants received a call about a baby stuck in a five-foot hole dug by Masai tribesmen. They raced to the site of the accident.

The baby was fine, but the hole was too deep for the eight-month-old calf to climb out. And the mother was unable to help.

To complicate matters, the mother thought the rescuers were a threat, and almost sat on the Land Rover. The driver, Dr. Vicki Fishlock, resident scientist of the elephant trust, recognized the mother, Zombe, from a mark on her ear.

The scientist scared her away with a high-pitched yell and maneuvered around her, as two men managed to get rope around the baby. By attaching the line to an SUV and putting the vehicle into reverse, they were able to pull the elephant calf out.

'Love This Binder ... Keeps Me In My Place'

'Love This Binder ... Keeps Me In My Place', Mitt Romney's awkward debate remark inspires a flood of mischievous Amazon reviews. Sarcastic binder reviews a hit on Amazon, During Tuesday's debate, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that he had been given "binders full of women" when he sought females for cabinet positions while governor of Massachusetts. Sarcastic binder enthusiasts pounced. A meme was born.

Snarky customers have posted slews of fake (though incredibly in-depth) reviews on, you guessed it, binders. Many of the reviews, tongues firmly in cheek, give credit to the binders for their ability to contain females. LeeBo of Raleigh, North Carolina writes, "As a wife and mother, I LOVE this binder. It keeps me in my place, allows me get dinner ready on time, AND costs 72% of more masculine version. Some people might think its sexist, but sheesh, I'm not binding my feet, just my brain."

And the hits keep coming. Martha H. Saltzman writes, "I used to think women were beyond organization till I discovered these binders. Now those pesky women are lined up, organized and orderly." And Maia Appleby writes, "I'm proud to say that I'm in this binder. I've spend 20 years working my way up from Walmart mom to soccer mom, and finally, I've hit the glass ceiling. I'm a binder mom..."

Victoria's Secret Model Without Retouching

Victoria's Secret Model Without Retouching, One of the brand's "angels" says people shouldn't expect these photos to reflect reality. Unretouched Victoria’s Secret Swimsuit Images, Victoria's Secret has come under fire once again for their rampant airbrushing. Back in August, a batch of unretouched swimsuit photos of supermodel Doutzen Kroes were accidentally released, and now that their Photoshopped companions have surfaced on, the differences are evident.

Alessandra Ambrosio Models $2.5 Million Victoria's Secret Fantasy Bra

The Victoria's Secret models themselves feel their retouched bodies are pure fantasy and say that is the whole point. "Retouching is an essential part of our job, you know," Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton told style blog Fashionista. "We're not selling reality; we're selling a story. It's all about creating this fantasy. And I don't think people should confuse fantasy and reality because no one is perfect-we all know that, and I think people should embrace themselves and not really focus on where people are depicted as perfect and where they're not."

Target Airs Christmas Ad ... In October

Target Airs Christmas Ad ... In October, The chain begins promoting the holidays even before Halloween arrives, prompting a collective groan. Target Decides It's Never Too Early for Christmas Ads, This year's presidential election was supposed to put a hold on retailers' usual onslaught of holiday ads. But one chain couldn't resist.

In what appears to be the first opening salvo of holiday shopping spots, Target (TGT) aired a Christmas-themed TV commercial over the weekend (AdAge's report), eliciting a few "too-soon" cries from consumers who are just starting to think about their Halloween costumes.

Though it feels as if they appear earlier and earlier each year, holiday TV ads typically start showing in early November. Online coupon site recently issued a report dubbing the shopping season "OctoNovemCember," saying that 39% of consumers begin their holiday shopping before November, according to their survey.

But snow and Christmas lights in mid-October? Just for the record, there are 37 days until Thanksgiving, and 70 until Christmas.

The Rise Of Tiny Jobs - For Tiny Pay

The Rise Of Tiny Jobs - For Tiny Pay, Desperate job seekers are taking on menial tasks that sometimes earn less than $5. Get a Tiny Job, Earn a Tiny Payment. Repeat., When Fernando Navales lost his job last June, things looked pretty grim.

His efforts to find gainful employment proved futile until he downloaded an app called Gigwalk, where companies offer small amounts of money for small tasks that take little time. (Users simply swipe to "accept" the task and complete it within a set time period.) Within days, he was earning more than he had in his previous position.

Navales threw himself into the work, taking between 30 and 40 "gigs" per day (often photographing restaurants for Microsoft's (MSFT) Bing search engine). Over the past year, he has completed about 750 gigs - and this new kind of employment has changed his perceptions of the working world.

"It's a large part of my life," he said. "I actually turned my brother onto it. He's in Ohio, but we flew out to New York together and we basically took a working trip to NY taking pictures of restaurants."

Best And Worst Of College Football So Far

Best And Worst Of College Football So Far, Is Alabama really the nation's top team, and is Geno Smith the true Heisman frontrunner? Forde-Yard Dash: Tackling BCS smear campaigns and doling out midseason awards, It's campaign season in America, and you know what that means: The air is full of negative, mud-slinging denigrations from one contender toward another.

Oh, and there's a presidential race going on as well.

The Dash is referring to the fan bases who have begun the annual autumnal rite of bashing their competitors' ranking in the BCS standings. Just in case the poll voters are listening and can be swayed.

If the voters do listen to enough voices, they'll be shocked to learn that everyone is overrated and nobody has any quality wins - and if they do, the refs probably handed the game to them. (Ask Notre Dame fans if they've heard all of the above since Saturday night's win over Stanford.)

For those with a loss, the justifications are flowing freely: a key injury, a bad day, a series of criminally overlooked holding calls that jobbed our virtuous program. Or, if you're LSU, it was too humid to win in Florida. Sniff.

TV Host Mocks Victims Of Japan Earthquake

TV Host Mocks Victims Of Japan Earthquake, An attempt to explain France's soccer loss to Japan takes a disgusting turn, a Yahoo! expert says. French TV show angers Japan with insensitive 'Fukushima Effect' joke, Franco-Japanese relations took a punch to the gut this week when French TV presenter Laurent Ruquier appeared to mock the victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster via the medium of goalkeeper photoshopping.

Following Japan's surprise 1-0 victory over France at the Stade de France on Friday, a broadcast on TV station France 2 showed a composite image of goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima with an extra set of arms, blaming the extra limbs - and his excellent performance - on the "Fukushima Effect."

These are critical skills that we all need, but they aren't a part of the curriculum at most schools which is why it is important for parents to instill good habits in their kids at home. U.S. Soccer Dominant In World Cup Qualifier

U.S. Soccer Dominant In World Cup Qualifier, Team USA shrugs off doomsday scenarios and reaches the final round of World Cup qualifying. U.S. avoids disaster, advances to final round of 2014 World Cup qualification process, Crisis was averted for the United States on Tuesday night as the grim specter of a long spell in the soccer wilderness was brushed aside in Kansas City.

Still, there was a reason why the celebrations from head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and his players told a tale of relief rather than jubilation after the 3-1 victory over Guatemala booked a spot in the next round of World Cup qualifying.

The semifinal round of the CONCACAF qualification process shouldn't have posed any concern for Klinsmann's side. Yet it did, from the frustrating night when it lost in Jamaica to a narrow escape against Antigua and Barbuda all the way to the first five minutes on Tuesday when Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz scored the opening goal that briefly cracked open the door to disaster.

Baffling Disappearance Of Giant Pumpkin

Baffling Disappearance Of Giant Pumpkin, A farm market owner didn't think anyone would be able to remove or steal such a large object. 300-Pound Pumpkin Plucked From Illinois Farm Stand, Unless it magically turned into a carriage at midnight to get Cinderella safely to the ball, the 300-pound pumpkin that used to adorn an Illinois farmstand was stolen. Or at least that's what Hammer's Farm Market owner Roger Hammer, of Peoria, Ill., believes happened.

"The last person that saw it was my brother. He drove by on 6:30 Sunday evening, and he said he saw it there. But 10 a.m. Monday when we opened, it was missing," Hammer told

Hammer is unsure how anyone would be able to remove or steal such a large pumpkin, since it was a feat even getting it to their own farm stand.

"I picked this up from another farmer farther north in Illinois. I actually had two of them. We sold one, and I didn't want to sell the second one because I thought it would be a good attraction for kids to take pictures with. We wanted to keep one mainly as an attraction," Hammer said.

World's Cheapest Car Coming To U.S.

World's Cheapest Car Coming To U.S., The Tata Nano has a $3,500 base price in India, but expect to pay more here. Tata bringing world's cheapest car to the U.S., Americans will soon get the chance to buy what is generally considered the world's most inexpensive automobile. But considering the safety problems experienced by the little Tata Nano - which has received only a mixed reception in its home Indian market - it's anyone's guess whether U.S. motorists will say yes or no-no to the microcar.

The Nano is the work of Tata, one of India's biggest industrial conglomerates and parent to a carmaking division with aggressive global aspirations. Along with the homegrown Tata brand it also owns both the British Jaguar and Land Rover marques.

There's no confusing their products, however. The original Tata Nano is a step up from a motor scooter, with only the most minimal creature comforts and a severe lacking of safety features, as well, according to critics.

The U.S. version will have to meet federal laws, of course, which would mandate the addition of such niceties as airbags and electronic stability control. And the engine may get a little boost from the basic 37 horsepower that it makes in India.

Defending Champs Rise In Power Rankings

Defending Champs Rise In Power Rankings, There's a new No. 2 this week, while the Jets have jumped 10 spots after a dominant win. NFL Power Rankings: Seahawks and Packers rising, Steelers and Bengals falling, It's going to be a rough week for the "We just beat them, so now we should be ranked ahead of them" crowd. Just about everyone in the league refused to comply with their spot in the power rankings, as the teams slotted 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 27th, 28th, 30th and 31st won, while the teams ranked 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th all lost.

What's a power ranker supposed to do with that? Give up on the concept of power rankings as fruitless and indicative of nothing? I refuse. I will revise, adjust and adapt to the ever-shifting climate of the league. Just probably not as quickly as you would like.

We've got a lot of big movers this week. All told, nine teams move five or more spots, but the most significant movement came from one game รข€’ the Jets leapt up by a staggering 10 spots, and the Colts dropped by nine. Read on to see where your team ranks, and be sure to complain about it in the comments below.

Actor Responds To Being Called 'Worst' Bond

Actor Responds To Being Called 'Worst' Bond, Roger Moore says critics once likened his performance to "a lump of English roast beef." Roger Moore laughs off James Bond bashing, Although he ties Sean Connery with the most amount of big-screen appearances as 007, Roger Moore is well aware he is the silliest of all the Bonds -- a take on the famed secret agent that has drawn criticism from certain fans over the years.

In typical Moore fashion, he simply laughs it off, saying recently he's used to being a target. From the New York Post:

Q: You've joked that, according to the Internet, you're the "worst Bond." Does that annoy you?

A: I'm used to bad reviews. My favorite was for [the 1956 film] "Diane" opposite Lana Turner. I played [her lover] Prince Henri. The review for either Time or Newsweek, I don't remember which, said "Lana Turner as Diane du Poitiers came onto the screen with a clattering of high heels and a flutter of false eyelashes, followed by a lump of English roast beef."

Another Indignity For Fraudulent Sports Hero

Another Indignity For Fraudulent Sports Hero, A bookstore shames Lance Armstrong over his bio, entitled "Every Second Counts." Scottish bookstore shelves Lance Armstrong bio in 'Fiction', So we all pretty much agree that no matter what the truth may be, Lance Armstrong's reputation is in tatters, yes? Given the United States Anti-Doping Agency's damning report on Armstrong's alleged masterminding of a covert doping ring, it's become tough to reconcile the image now of Armstrong as secretive fraud with that of the heroic seven-time winner of the Tour de France.

Of course, the lawsuits are flying, with Armstrong charging that there is no merit to the USADA's accusations, and other entities, including the federal government, looking for their pound of flesh from Armstrong. Still, you can't just come right out and say Armstrong is a doper without risking incurring his wrath; he has filed suit before to protect his name.

So a Glasgow bookstore has taken a hide-in-plain-sight step: filing Armstrong's autobiography under the heading of "Fiction." Effective statement, isn't it?

BlackBerry Phones Leave A Bitter Taste

BlackBerry Phones Leave A Bitter Taste, Once a must-have for movers and shakers, the phone now embarrasses many users. The BlackBerry as Black Sheep, Rachel Crosby speaks about her BlackBerry phone the way someone might speak of an embarrassing relative.

"I'm ashamed of it," said Ms. Crosby, a Los Angeles sales representative who said she had stopped pulling out her BlackBerry at cocktail parties and conferences. In meetings, she says she hides her BlackBerry beneath her iPad for fear clients will see it and judge her.

The BlackBerry was once proudly carried by the high-powered and the elite, but those who still hold one today say the device has become a magnet for mockery and derision from those with iPhones and the latest Android phones. Research in Motion may still be successful selling BlackBerrys in countries like India and Indonesia, but in the United States the company is clinging to less than 5 percent of the smartphone market - down from a dominating 50 percent just three years ago.

The company's future all depends on a much-delayed new phone coming next year; meanwhile RIM recorded a net loss of $753 million in the first half of the year compared with a profit of more than $1 billion a year earlier.

The Big Issue That Many DIYers Overlook

The Big Issue That Many DIYers Overlook, Many homeowners get in trouble with officials for even relatively small home projects. Home improvements that require permits, If you purchased your home prior to the recent housing collapse, your investment may not be paying off the way you had hoped. If your home is on the market, you might be struggling to get an offer high enough to pay off your mortgage. For that reason, some homeowners are taking on remodeling projects to raise the value of their homes.

For the do-it-yourself remodeler, obtaining permits is expensive, time-consuming and sometimes frustrating, but for many home renovations it's necessary and required. Some municipalities charge 1% of the total construction costs to issue the permit and may take up to six weeks to complete the inspections. That's time and money that some homeowners don't have. Many homeowners sidestep the permit process as a result.

Top 10 Interview Myths Debunked, Interviewers feel obliged to offer you a drink, but they do not want you to say yes. 10 Job Interview Myths Debunked, You probably get a little nervous before you go into a job interview. Even if you've copiously prepped, you figure the interviewer will hold all the cards. She knows everything about her company and the job you want, and she's got a vision of the perfect employee that doesn't exactly describe you.

Not so, says David Couper, a Los Angeles career and executive coach and the author of Outsiders on the Inside: How to Create a Winning Career Even When You Don't Fit In. In reality, most interviewers are ill-prepared and distracted, he says. "They usually just wing it based on their own experience."

Before he became a consultant and coach, Couper worked in human resources and training at several big companies in Chicago and Los Angeles, including the now-defunct consulting giant Arthur Andersen. He has sat in the interviewer's chair many times.

Yankees Reeling, On Verge Of Elimination

Yankees Reeling, On Verge Of Elimination, New York is mostly powerless against Detroit's Justin Verlander and now faces a bleak outlook. Yankees' struggles leave Joe Girardi between rock and a vacation, No one feels bad for Joe Girardi, even if he did spend the afternoon picking warm bodies from the clubhouse, the early evening explaining to the world why he believed some were warmer than others, and the rest of the night confirming cold is cold and maybe it wasn't worth all the thought and effort.

His is a big-boy job in a big-boy town. He wears that number on his back while the New York Yankees have hardly seemed farther from their 28th world championship, even eight wins away. Losses are cataclysmic this time of year, as are oh-three holes in the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees scored another run Tuesday night, the kind of thing they do now every 21 innings or so. Girardi picked the men and the order in which they'd bat, which would not seem like much of a deal until you're scoring a run every 21 innings or so.

The exhibition items range from delicate porcelain dishes and silver cutlery to a 17-ton section of the hull, complete with portholes, pulled from the Atlantic seabed where the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank 100 years ago with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

It's Official: New 'X Factor' Hosts Named

It's Official: New 'X Factor' Hosts Named, Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez have signed on to co-host the live performance show. Khloe Kardashian, Mario Lopez Officially Hired As 'X Factor' Hosts, Okay, "X Factor" fans, I have good news and bad news. Which would you like first? Oh, heck, let's just rip off the Band-Aid and get down to it: The bad news is, Khloe Kardashian--yes, THE Khloe Kardashian--has officially signed on to co-host "The X Factor," when the show goes live on November 1. [Insert Edvard-Munch-painting-esque scream here...]

Honestly, I do not know what Simon Cowell and Fox are thinking with this kontroversial Khloe kasting. Last year's "X Factor" host, British underwear model Steve Jones, was a disaster on the show, coming across as utterly un-empathetic and unlikable...and Steve actually had plenty of past TV-presenting experience. But none of that past experience properly prepared him to oversee a chaotic program that frequently involved sobbing children, contestant meltdowns, deadlocked decisions, rambling judges, and a strict schedule (because gawd forbid that the show ever preempt "Bones"). Poor Steve tried his best, but he just couldn't handle it. So what makes Simon think that Khloe, an E! reality starlet with zero TV hosting experience, will fare any better?

Social Security Benefits To Go Up

Social Security Benefits To Go Up, The automatic payment increase, which starts in January, is one of the smallest since 1975. Social Security benefits to go up by 1.7 percent, More than 56 million Social Security recipients will see their monthly payments go up by 1.7 percent next year.

The increase, which starts in January, is tied to a measure of inflation released Tuesday. Social Security payments for retired workers average $1,237 a month, or about $14,800 a year. A 1.7 percent increase will amount to about $21 a month, or $252 a year, on average.

Social Security recipients received a 3.6 percent increase in benefits this year after getting none the previous two years.

Security Scare For Wounded Pakistani Girl

Security Scare For Wounded Pakistani Girl, Two people claiming to be family members are stopped at the hospital where she is recovering. UK police concerned about wounded Pakistani girl's "well-wishers", Two people wanting to visit the Pakistani girl wounded by Taliban gunmen raised suspicion in Britain on Tuesday after turning up overnight at the hospital where she is undergoing treatment, the hospital and police said.

Authorities are highly sensitive about Malala Yousufzai's security because the Taliban, who targeted her for advocating education for girls, say they would again try to kill the 14-year-old if she survived last week's attack.

Yousufzai was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham to receive specialist treatment after the shooting, which drew widespread condemnation. She has become a potent symbol of resistance to the radical Islamist group's effort to deny women an education.

Stimulus-Aided Battery Firm Goes Bankrupt

Stimulus-Aided Battery Firm Goes Bankrupt, A123 Systems won $249 million in a federal grant from the Obama administration. Battery builder A123 Systems that won $249 million federal grant files for bankruptcy, No company has embodied Washington's hope for an American-built electric vehicle business like A123 Systems. The Massachusetts-based company was supposed to become the leading home-grown supplier of lithium-ion batteries for automakers in the United States and around the world -- fueled in part by a $249 million grant from the Obama administration. Today, A123 Systems filed for bankruptcy, saying much of its assets would be sold after losing $857 million over the past several years. Here's why it failed.

That photo above comes from an April 2010 speech in the Rose Garden of the White House, where President Barack Obama hailed A123 with Chief Executive David Vieux on his left, for its plans to create 2,000 jobs by 2012. A123 also won $125 million in grants and tax credits from Michigan state officials for building plants there. I was in the audience covering the event, and walked out of the White House while talking to two new A123 employees -- both grateful engineers who had lost jobs in the recession and spent months e-mailing resumes with few responses.

Football Team's Terrible Luck On Punt

Football Team's Terrible Luck On Punt, A high school squad's punt goes a minus-27 yards for a safety without ever being touched. Texas wind knocks punt back for incredibly unlikely safety, There was strange weather across the nation over the weekend, but no one dealt with a more blustery day than the one that affected the Denton (Texas) Guyer High game against Trophy Club (Texas) Byron Nelson High. Just ask Byron Nelson's punter.

As you can see in the rather bizarre video above, Nelson was the victim of one of the most bizarre safeties you will ever see; not only did the ball not go downfield, it ended up in the Nelson end zone, all without a blocked kick.

After lining up for a punt on its own 27-yard line, the unidentified Nelson punter gave the ball a boot only to see a remarkably stiff wind knock it directly backwards. The football rolled to the Nelson end zone and rested there, sending both Nelson and Guyer players scrambling to try and recover it.

The Global Super-Rich... And Everyone Else

The Global Super-Rich... And Everyone Else, The wealthy elite often don't see themselves as citizens belonging to any country. The Rise of the Super-Rich Is a Global Phenomenon: Chrystia Freeland, The growing gap between the top 1% and the rest of the U.S. population has emerged as a major issue in this year's presidential campaign, but it's not likely to narrow much no matter who wins, says Chrystia Freeland, author of the new book "Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else."

As the title suggests, "the increase in income inequality" in the U.S. is not just a domestic development but "is happening in all Western industrialized countries," Freeland tells The Daily Ticker in the accompanying interview. "And crucially you're seeing the same phenomenon in the big emerging market economies."

Freeland says globalization is at the root of income inequality around the world. Both capital and labor are global therefore businesses leaders must maintain a global perspective, says Freeland.

Scorching-Hot Alien Planet Discovered

Scorching-Hot Alien Planet Discovered, The newfound world is right in our solar system's backyard, but it's still too distant to visit. 'Next-Door' Alien Planet Still Too Distant to Visit - for Now, Astronomers have discovered an alien planet right in our solar system's backyard, but residents of Earth shouldn't get their hopes up for an exploration mission anytime soon. The newfound world is much too far away for probes to visit using current technology, experts say.

Researchers announced Tuesday (Oct. 16) that the scorching-hot alien planet Alpha Centauri Bb, which is about as massive as Earth, resides in the three-star Alpha Centauri system. While no other star is closer to our sun than the Alpha Centauri trio, they're still about 4.3 light-years away, making a close-up look at the planet pretty much impossible right now.

A robotic exoplanet mission launching today "would require about 40,000 years to get to Alpha Centauri," Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, told reporters Tuesday. "So, given our propensity for instant gratification, that's not really an option that's on the table."

But Laughlin, who was not involved in the discovery, added that attitudes could change if researchers made a few more intriguing discoveries in the Alpha Centauri system.

Giants Return Home To 'Heartless' Scene

Flamin' Hot Cheetos Ignite School Uproar

Flamin' Hot Cheetos Ignite School Uproar, Some officials want to ban the popular snack, but not just because of its nutritional value. Schools Take Aim at Popular Flamin' Hot Cheetos, School districts in California and New Mexico are trying to ban the popular snack food Flamin' Hot Cheetos because they say it is a health hazard to students.

School officials say the concern is their nutritional value, or lack thereof. Each bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos contains 26 grams of fat and a quarter of the amount of salt that's recommended for the entire day.

One school district in Illinois, which used to sell about 150,000 bags each year, has already taken the snack off its menu.

"If children were to bring in snacks that are high in fat, high in calories, that's their choice," Rockford School District Interim Superintendent Robert Willis said. "We're not going to be providing those kinds of foods."

Why Cops Returned This Man's Pot, But police did charge another man for stealing marijuana plants from Thomas Davis's greenhouse. Maine police return stolen marijuana to man, It's not every day that police hand you $12,800 worth of pot.

But such was the case in Ellsworth, Maine, where local police officers returned the 17 stolen plants to licensed medical marijuana caregiver Thomas Davis, the Bangor Daily News reports.

The plants were taken last week from a greenhouse near Davis' home.

Police arrested and charged Aaron Pert, 32, of Trenton, Maine, with the burglary after he admitted to the crime after a car he was in was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign. Pert eventually told police where the freshly harvested plants were stashed and police recovered the marijuana, according to the Daily News.

Now it seemed Ellsworth police had a dilemma. They didn't know whether to destroy the pot, which they would normally do with illegal drugs, or return the pot to Davis.

These Credit Myths Are Costing You

These Credit Myths Are Costing You, People think that checking their credit reports too often can hurt their score, but ignore real problems. 10 Common Credit Myths That Could Be Costing You Money, Managing credit is one of the most common subjects that I've been getting asked about lately. Perhaps it's because so many had their credit scores damaged during the recession and are now trying to improve them in order to qualify for the record low mortgage rates we've been seeing. In addition, employers have increasingly been using credit scores to evaluate applicants and especially in this job market, every little factor really counts. So regardless of your motivation to increase your credit score, here are some of the most common credit myths I've heard that could be hurting your score:

1) I haven't done anything wrong so my credit is fine. Even if you've done everything right, your credit could still be in trouble. That's because 70% of credit reports have errors on them. In the likelihood that you have one of them, you could be paying more in interest than you need to be.

2) If I check my credit report, it will hurt my score. Checking your own report generally doesn't hurt your score but errors do so don't let this be an excuse not to do it.

Warning Signs Of Meningitis To Watch For

Warning Signs Of Meningitis To Watch For, It can take more than 40 days for fungal meningitis symptoms to appear, doctors warn. There is a scary new twist in the national meningitis outbreak among patients who received a tainted steroid drug. As fungal meningitis deaths and cases rise across the US, the FDA has announced that two additional drugs could also be culprits in the outbreak.

About 14,000 people are thought to have been exposed to the contaminated steroid. So far, 15 have died and 214 have been stricken, mostly with fungal meningitis, the CDC reports, though some patients developed other fungal infections. The steroid was tainted with a fungus that causes a type of meningitis that can result in stroke.

Now, the FDA is investigating three additional cases of suspected fungal meningitis or other fungal infections in patients who received other injected drugs made by New England Compounding Center (NECC), ABC News reports. "The sterility of any injectable drugs ... produced by NECC are of significant concern," the FDA warned.

The hair suit and teeth shoes are art pieces, so they're not for sale, but we're thinking this ensemble would be an absolutely perfect Halloween costume if you're planning on going as a zombie tap dancer.

Then, just feet short of the goal line, Ferns slowed and walked out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Everyone in the stadium was stunned, except for Ferns' teammates, who instantly knew what he was doing: He was setting up a teammate to score a fitting touchdown in memory of his late father, who had died just two days earlier from a catastrophic stroke.

Stumbles In The Presidential Debate

Stumbles In The Presidential Debate, A look at the accuracy of claims made by Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. FACT CHECK: Stumbles in latest presidential debate, In the rough-and-tumble of a town hall-style presidential debate, the facts took something of a beating Tuesday night.

Mitt Romney wrongly claimed that it took 14 days for President Barack Obama to brand the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya a terrorist act. Obama yet again claimed that ending the Afghanistan and Iraq wars makes money available to "rebuild America," even though it doesn't.

A look at some of their claims:

OBAMA: The day after last month's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, "I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people and the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened. That this was an act of terror and I also said that we're going to hunt down those who committed this crime."

Diver's Logo Put In Very Awkward Place

Diver's Logo Put In Very Awkward Place, Olympic star Tom Daley's promotion for British Gas leads to an unfortunate photo. Tom Daley's sponsorship with British Gas causes an awkward moment (PHOTO), Sponsorship for Olympic athletes usually helps both the Olympian and the company sponsoring them. The Olympian gets money to train and live, and the sponsor gains valuable exposure.

But in the case of British Gas' sponsorship of bronze medal-winning UK diver Tom Daley, the company could have benefited from checking out their company's placement on his swimsuit.

Yep, that's a pretty awkward placement. On the other hand, I doubt I'll forget about how British Gas supports Olympic divers anytime soon.

Since the London Games, Daley, who is just 18 years old, has become a superstar in Britain and is looking to cash in on his celebrity status.

Armstrong Steps Down From Livestrong

Armstrong Steps Down From Livestrong, The embattled cyclist will relinquish his role as chairman of the cancer-fighting charity. The Lance Armstrong story, and fallout, continues. On Wednesday morning, multiple reports indicated that Armstrong will be stepping down as head of his LiveStrong cancer foundation.

This is a major public relations blow for Armstrong; LiveStrong's trademark yellow bracelets are omnipresent at fitness events, and even people unconcerned with whether Armstrong retains his seven Tour de France titles can understand and appreciate the impact of an organization devoted to improving cancer awareness and research.

The move is the latest in a wave of bad news for Armstrong, whom the United States Anti-Doping Agency has painted as the kingpin and mastermind of a complex international doping ring. Armstrong has maintained his innocence throughout the entire investigation.

Debate Moderator Comes Under Fire

Debate Moderator Comes Under Fire, Republicans complain that CNN's Candy Crowley sided with Obama during a key debate moment. From sidelines, debate moderator Crowley becomes part of story, As in pro football this season, many of the noisiest complaints after political debates have been directed not at the participants, but at the referees.

Tuesday's debate between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney was no exception, as moderator Candy Crowley of CNN came under fire for siding with Obama during one of his sharpest exchanges with Romney.

In that moment, Crowley walked into the middle of a national security controversy and contravened the wishes of both presidential campaigns that she remain largely a spectator in the second presidential debate.

Internet Abuzz Over Romney's 'Binders'

Internet Abuzz Over Romney's 'Binders', An inadvertently funny remark by the GOP nominee creates an instant stir on social media. The 'Binder' Everyone Is Talking About, Despite all the fireworks over taxes, oil and Libya, the most buzz-worthy social media moment of Tuesday night's presidential debate was Republican nominee Mitt Romney's comment about "binders full of women."

The inadvertently funny comment came in response to a question about pay equity for women from a member of the audience of the debate between Romney and President Obama at Hofstra University.

Romney was explaining that as the governor of Massachusetts searching for qualified women to fill cabinet posts, women's groups brought him "binders full of women" who were good candidates.

"And I said, 'Well, gosh, can't we - can't we find some - some women that are also qualified?" Romney said. "I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Penn State Cheerleader's Tragic Accident

Penn State Cheerleader's Tragic Accident, The campus unites again after Paige Raque's fifth-story fall leaves her in critical condition. Penn State cheerleader's fall and brain injury brings campus together in prayer, The darkest year in the history of Penn State University has served to bring the campus together like never before. And now it's united for another tragic reason: a life-threatening injury to one of its students.

On Saturday night, sophomore cheerleader Paige Raque fell 39 feet out of a fifth-story window in the apartment building where she lives. She is now in critical condition at a local hospital. There is no short-term or long-term prognosis yet.

"This morning she did show some signs of movement," Randy Jepson told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday. Jepson, who is acting as the Raque family spokesman, coaches Paige's older brother, Parker, on the Penn State gymnastics team. He is also the father of Paige's freshman year roommate.

Obama Takes Charge And Wins Debate

Obama Takes Charge And Wins Debate, The president successfully harps on a problem with Romney throughout the forum, says Jeff Greenfield. Obama wins the second debate. Too bad it's not the one that mattered., When the evening began, one observation dominated the conversation: "If President Barack Obama has another debate like the last one, the election's over."

When the evening ended, I was struck by a different thought: If Obama had performed this way at the first debate, the election would have been over.

In every debate, whatever the format, whatever the questions, there is one and only one way to identify the winner: Who commands the room? Who drives the narrative? Who is in charge? More often than not on Tuesday night, I think, Obama had the better of it.

Waterfall Swing Is Mesmerizing To Watch

Waterfall Swing Is Mesmerizing To Watch, It appears these riders are headed for a wet ride, but a cool trick brings a nice surprise. Waterfall Swing makes waves on the Web, This is not your swing set from childhood. The Waterfall Swing-created by Mike O'Toole, Andrew Ratcliff, Ian Charnas, and Andrew Witte of the Brooklyn-based art and architecture firm Dash 7 Design-has a computer in it. And, of course, a lot of water. Video of the swing has captured the attention of the Web.

The clip shows riders on the swings getting a big push toward a wall of water. As they swing forward, a hole opens up for them to swing through without getting wet. It's part art installation, part engineering marvel and part play structure.

The friends and designers put their heads together to come up with the cool contraption for the 2011 World Maker Faire. By all accounts, they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams-or perhaps ours.

Uh-Oh: You're At The Airport Without Any ID

Uh-Oh: You're At The Airport Without Any ID, One family learns how the TSA reacts when mom can't produce proper photo identification. Flying Without a Photo ID, Not only are extra fees for checked bags annoying, but they nearly caused me to miss a flight. Last Friday, while my family gulped down breakfast before leaving for a weekend trip, I dealt with a last-minute, work-related technology snafu and went through a mental travel check list. Cancel delivery of the newspapers? Yes.

Stop mail? Yes. All that was left was to check in online and print out the boarding passes. I grabbed my wallet to pay the $50 in advance for two checked bags to save time at the airport. We then piled into the minivan, dropped our dog off at the kennel and headed to the airport, congratulating ourselves that, for once, we were on schedule. Our self-satisfaction -- or at least, mine -- evaporated, though, when we arrived at the airport, I opened my purse and discovered that my wallet was missing. I quickly realized that after using my credit card to pay for the checked bags, I had left my wallet on my desk.

Costly Loss For Yankees: Jeter Injured

Costly Loss For Yankees: Jeter Injured, He fractures his ankle, and aura of invincibility, in the 12th inning as the Tigers prevail. Fractured ankle shatters Derek Jeter's aura of invincibility in Yankees' loss, Derek Jeter broke his left ankle early Sunday morning in the 12th inning of a playoff game that was supposed to be his, because all playoff games are supposed to be his. Jeter's career, full of brilliance, needs no such hyperbole. It finds itself awash in it anyway. He is not tough. He is the toughest. He is not clutch. He is the clutchest. He is not the captain. He is The Captain.

Our tendency to look at Jeter in absolutes has manifested itself in another fashion: agelessness and invincibility joining his oeuvre. Jeter may be 38. So what? He looks a decade younger. He may not move like he once did at shortstop. That's fine. He pounded out 216 hits this season. Whatever Derek Jeter may be matters not as much as what we want him to be. He is the most idealized baseball player, certainly, and maybe the most of any professional athlete in his generation.

To see him scream, then - to see him mouth agape, looking back at a left ankle on fire, fractured badly enough it will require at least three months recovery time and keep him sidelined for however much more postseason the New York Yankees can muster following their 6-4 insult-to-injury loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the ALCS - was to see Jeter at his rawest. His ankle popped. It stripped away the sheen of who we want Jeter to be and revealed who he really is.
