A police car had stopped the red Seat Ibiza in a lay-by for a check but, when officers got out of their car, the vehicle sped off and hit the boy on a crossing close to an Asda store. A police spokesman said: "He tragically died of his injuries." The car failed to stop and continued onto the Chain Bar roundabout on the M606, where it collided with two other vehicles. The car was later recovered on Westfield Lane, Wyke. Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragedy for the family and they are absolutely devastated.
